Low-E (low emissivity) windows have a microscopic metallic coating on the glass that reflects heat while letting light through. In our St. Louis climate, this glass works year round to save you money on energy bills. In summer it reflects solar heat away from your home, and in winter it reflects heat back inside. When combined with Argon gas fill between the panes, you get excellent insulation. Most window brands offer different Low-E packages, with different layers of Low-E coatings, often on different panes of glass, to hit different specifications. Glass performance is rated by SHGC, which measures how well it resists heat from the sun, and U-Factor, which measures how well it resists heat loss. Most standard Low-E packages with a SHGC under .30 and a U-Factor under .30 provide great efficiency in St. Louis. If you have a south or west facing wall, consider a Low-E package with a lower SHGC around .22 to really help with heat gain from the sun. In many cases, triple pane is not necessary in our climate.
